DTES firehall mural

A controversial mural of the Grim Reaper on a Vancouver fire hall is coming down after the B.C. Civil Liberties Association complained it was inappropriate for the Downtown Eastside.

The mural features the Grim Reaper, drawn in comic-book style and holding a scythe, with the words “The Skids” on it.

At the tip of the blade are a syringe and a drop of blood. At the bottom of the mural are the words: “It’s not the end of the world, but we can see it from here.”

The mural was painted 15 years ago on the back wall of the Main Street fire hall, visible from outside the building.

David Eby, executive director of the B.C. Civil Liberties Association, said the image shows a lack of sensitivity to neighbourhood concerns.

He said that he’s particularly concerned about the reference to the neighbourhood as “The Skids” and that he doesn’t think the angel of death is an appropriate mascot for the fire department.

The fire department told Eby in February that a work order to remove the mural, which was temporarily covered up during the Olympics, had been issued.

But last week, Eby noticed the mural was visible again, so he reiterated his concerns.

Assistant fire chief Wade Pierlot said the Vancouver fire department uncovered the mural again in order to clean the building and plans to remove it “sooner rather than later.”

“It’s been uncovered for the last few days or more while they’ve been doing the cleaning,” he said.

“We are in the process of removing the mural completely. It’s fastened up there quite permanently right now, so as soon as we can, … we’ll be removing the mural entirely.”

Pierlot said the department never intended for the mural to be derogatory.

I guess the truth hurts. I can understand the sensitivity. But shit man, free speech right?!?!?!?!

IT IS THE SKIDS. And until the government gets its head out of its ass, its going to stay that way. It doesnt matter what anybody does to try and help the addicts, the mentally ill, homeless and poor. They cant help themselves and I havent seen any improvement over the last 8 years the libs have been in power so what gives.

Are any of these street people sensitive to my son when we are down there trying to shop or visit people? No.

They need help, but they don’t need sensitivity.
